AGATE IS A SILICATE MATERIAL WITH A TRIGONAL CRYSTAL SYSTEM. IT HAS A WAXY LUSTER AND A 7 HARDNESS ON THE MOH’S SCALE. IT FORMS IN ALL MINERAL ENVIRONMENTS BUT IS MOST COMMONLY FOUND IN INGENIOUS ROCKS. HISTORICALLY, AGATES WERE HIGHLY PRIZED AMONG ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS.
